You Say I've Inherited What???

i get a phone call last friday telling me there was a note pinned to the door of my old house (deserted and up for sale) saying to contact this person asap because i am an heir to something or other.. eventually, i get around to it this morning; i make the call.. it seems xto energy corporation is looking for me because i'm an heir to my great grandmother's mineral rights to a 4 acre strip of land in burleson texas.

the land is wanted for drilling purposes by the oil and gas drilling exploration team.. i met with the agent this morning.

he showed me my great grandmother's obituary and his copy of the family tree.

Congratulations and best wishes on your windfall! "Out of the blue" for me was a financial coup that put a check in hand for the very dollar amount I needed to move into my new home. Several months prior I received one of those too-good-to-be-true notices about unclaimed funds---'we'll get ya yer dough for a modest fee' sort of come-ons. Checked into it, found it legit and, subsequent to the paper work, was cut a check that moved me into the new place. Seems there was a long-forgotten insurance policy that was accruing cash value, and through person-search they found me. The regular ID was simple. The hard part was providing proof that I had lived at 1234 Abbadabba Ave., Anytown, USA. thirty-five years ago. Searching through EVERYTHING, I found a single envelope, letter intact, mailed to me at that particular time and addressed to me at 1234 Abbadabba Avenue! Love my new home!

Terry--- are you the Terry who wrote the story "My Life in Jehovah's Service", whose best friend is Johnnie? If so, it's your story that was my first step out of the old/into the new! Profound and utter thanx!

Shunned by an old friend

in all the years i was a jw, although i had many acquaintances, i only had 3 really close friends.

two of them are no longer jws.

one is trev, who is obviously a lot more than a friend to me now, and my friend marion left the wts a few months ago, with a lot of encouragement from me.. my other friend is still very much a jw, and when i was announced as no longer a jw last year, she phoned me to tell me how very upset and disappointed she was.

Subjective v. Objective; Heart v. Mind---ever the tug of war! "A [wo]man's insight slows down [her]/his anger." Outlaw is spot on re the fear factor. Look at Peter when he ceased associating with the Gentile converts. Maybe we need a "Paul" to set matters straight---publicly reproving the Governing Body! We've all been there, and I know you draw comfort from your friends here---and we don't even think alike anymore! Well, we used to pretend, didn't we? Who knows: someday at a big apostafest during testimony time (?), Best Friend may come forward and say, "Linda has always been my dearest friend, but I was afraid and denied her. True love shows no fear and I'm asking her forgiveness." It could happen!

Now a more cautious and objective student of the seen and unseen, I have found that, outside the pulsating walls of The KH, I have turned the tables. I have chastened my typically emotional and religiously-susceptible nature into that evinced by Sgt. Joe Friday: "Just the facts, ma'am." For example, I have taken to heart and mind words from AWAKE!, Oct. 22, 1973, p.6, for all they are worth:

"Reasonable persons agree that the only fair method is to examine the EVIDENCE on both sides, both for and against a disputed theory. That is how one arrives at the Truth." [emphasis added mine]

Further, from THE WATCHTOWER, Jan. 15, 1974, p.?:

"When persons are in great danger from a source that THEY DO NOT SUSPECT or are BEING MISLED BY THOSE THEY CONSIDER FRIENDS, is it an unkindness to warn them? They may prefer not to believe the warning. They may even resent it. But does that free one from the moral responsibility to give the warning?" [emphasis added mine]

I'm finally OK with, as Jimbo admonished on a thread dealing with what to believe now, I DON'T KNOW! I have noted (on paper) untold comments from countless sources that are gradually becoming part of my invisible shield against Cult tactics, the most insidious for me being emotional control. Surely, there will be more good stuff to follow!

Mom Died -- and I found out from an old friend!

ok, i'm writing this thru tears as i just found out in the last 5 minutes.

my dad died in august, and they had been together just 1 or 2 weeks over 70 years married!

i didn't expect her to last without him, and visa versa.. i just tried to call my sister, and no answer there.

The greatest sympathy for you in your time of "doubled" grief. I believe it was Maya Angelou who said that you will miss your parents when they are gone, regardless of your relationship with them. Well, variations and qualifications on that one! My father died recently from a bad side effect of medication that, of course, ended up solving the initial problem but killed him.

Regarding the supposed inability of JWs to make a good decision based on the leadings of their "Bible-trained" conscience, they have imposed upon them a myriad of rules and regulations for every imaginable occurrence. Going to a funeral in Christendom will, without fail, stumble the entire community who knows that you are a staunch JW. If you are a JW wife with an unbelieving husband, who wishes you to accompany him to the church, perhaps you could persuade him otherwise as your failure to participate in a forced pagan act of worship would cause him untold humiliation. Couldn't I just prepare a nice meal for the family to show I really am a true Christian, but who will nevertheless not be induced to bow to your God-dishonoring idols? What about Naaman's asking permission to take his Lord into the Temple of Dagon? The prophet told him to go in peace!

I surely like the idea that heaven or the universe, as many say, will settle all accounts. 'The wheels of justice grind slowly, yet exceeding[ly] fine'.

Dear Blondie,

Once again, thank you for taking the unrealistically portrayed "everyday life" of Jehovah's Witnesses and injecting it with a dose of reality. For those of us who have made it through the gamut of denial, anger, bargaining, depression and are now at some level of acceptance (oh, really?), we look at such beautiful thoughts with a skeptical mind and wary heart. There are always tried-and-true friends who do match, for the most part, the ideals expressed in the article. In my one year of official inactivity (after forty years of absolute regularity) and non-attendance at meetings for five months, I have heard not a peep from the elders. One elder's much earlier offer to take me out in service (if I called him), and my subsequent failure to ever call him, was construed as a refusal to accept spiritual help. I was told that, honestly! My JW friends and family would do anything for me, and I them. It just takes all the fun out of it, though, when you're lying half-dead, wounded and bleeding, and way too much later a "loving, caring shepherd" cries out, "Oh, I didn't know! Why didn't you tell me?" Do these fellows positively know the appearance of the flock entrusted into their care?

Pumpkin bars and snow sound great. We have both here, but I prefer the former to the latter. Hate chaining-up! What I like about our location is in autumn we have the beauty of the East Coast but not the severity of weather come winter. And gas heat-no more hauling wood!

Thank you again for the realism you bring to the bountiful, spiritual table of the Lord. At last, preparation is in the right hands!

after years of research, i think i've finally come across the biggest hole in the basic doctrine of jw's .

they say that there is no hell...but that you can live for eternity in a world full of nothing but witnesses.... .

...i'm not sure, but i think this statement contradicts itself??????

Wow! Where does one begin? But, of course, you asked for only ONE. Restraint and clarity. I have to say that my lock-step adherence to and proclamation of the issue of universal sovereignty was my religion. Then I read in one of Randy's pieces about the JUDGE, with his legal background, conjuring up the weird notion of a heavenly courtroom drama (kindly refer to the book of Job). Sir Nose's unfolding treatise has me mouth agape as the presentation is so totally awesome (why couldn't WT publications ever be so captivating?). What quickly and mercifully filled in this horrendous gaping maw of spiritual, doctrinal emptiness for me was Tom's writing on what the Good News truly is: the majority of [NT] scriptures are in reference to the good news of the Christ or God. WT focus is the good news of the KINGDOM, and its correlation to kingdom references of Daniel. I do hope I've made myself clear.

It's good to have this information readily available as there are so many new to the board. Steve's book was made a gift to me and, as an avid note-taker (required and learnt in school), I have this vital information pretty much embedded in the brain. We who are helping others to escape (though they may not realize it yet) need to know this material and how to seamlessly incorporate the underlying principles into our conversations. What gets me is how we once methodically policed our own thoughts, believing it was merely scriptural admonition to make all thinking subject to the Christ. It is too overwhelming: the CULT controls information, behavior, emotions and thought to one's detriment, yet one sincerely thinks it is loving discipline ' for the life now and that which is to come.' It's so clear now what horrid carnage lies waste on the so-called "Way of Holiness". Thank you again for reminding us of this valuable tool.

The Glad Game helped Pollyanna forget her gloom about not having a doll. Her poor missionary father could not afford to buy her one. He requested one of the missionary people, but when the missionary barrels arrived, they found a pair of crutches but no doll. After her initial disappointment, Pollyanna found a reason to be glad: they didn't have to use the crutches!

There are 826 glad or happy texts in the bible, eg., "rejoice in the Lord", "be glad you people", etc.
